Conical Flask (Erlenmeyer)
Borosilicate conical flasks, also known as Erlenmeyer flasks, from Alcon Scientific Instruments — supplied to school, college, hospital and industrial laboratories across India.
Borosilicate glass
These flasks are made from borosilicate glass rather than ordinary soda-lime glass. Borosilicate has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, so it withstands direct heating and rapid temperature change far better, and it resists attack from most acids and solvents.
What a conical flask is used for
The narrow neck and sloping sides are what make this flask useful: contents can be swirled vigorously without splashing, and the neck takes a stopper or cotton plug. It is the standard vessel for titration, for culturing and incubating media, and for mixing and heating solutions. Graduated volume markings are approximate and intended for guidance rather than accurate measurement.
