Borosilicate glass
These beakers are made from borosilicate glass rather than ordinary soda-lime glass. Borosilicate has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, so it withstands direct heating and rapid temperature change far better, and it resists attack from most acids and solvents. For any lab where beakers go on a hotplate or burner, this is the material that matters.
What a beaker is used for
The beaker is the general-purpose container of any laboratory. It is used for mixing and stirring, heating liquids, holding reagents, dissolving solids and transferring liquids between vessels. Each beaker carries graduated volume markings and a pouring spout. The graduations are approximate and intended for rough guidance — where accurate volumetric measurement is required, use a volumetric flask, pipette or measuring cylinder.
