These are glass petri dishes with a matching lid, made to be autoclaved and reused rather than discarded. For a teaching laboratory running practicals term after term, reusable glass works out considerably cheaper than disposable plastic and produces no single-use waste. Borosilicate withstands repeated autoclaving and dry heat sterilisation without distorting.
What a petri dish is used for
Culturing bacteria and fungi on agar, observing colony growth, germinating seeds in biology practicals, and holding specimens for dissection or examination under a stereo microscope. The loose-fitting lid allows gas exchange while keeping airborne contamination out.
