Borosilicate glass
Test tubes are heated more often than almost any other item of glassware, which is precisely why the material matters. Borosilicate glass has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, so it tolerates direct flame and rapid cooling far better than ordinary soda-lime glass, and it resists attack from most acids and solvents.
What test tubes are used for
The everyday vessel for small-volume work: holding and heating samples, observing reactions and colour changes, qualitative analysis, and culturing in microbiology. Sizes are given as diameter by length in millimetres, which is the convention used across laboratory supply.
